Can one pre-load the iso onto the hard drive and boot
from there? I have the kit to read/write to an external
hard drive via a USB port and was wondering about
whether this is a way of loading a newer version of the
X/L/Ubuntu family on my old laptops which can't handle
DVD nor boot from USB. Any ideas on what should be done
to prevent over-writing etc during the process?
My oldest laptops don't even have ethernet (although if I
can find the right edge-interfacing - 124 contact -
modem/ethernet card, I have the possibility of an upgrade
- anyone know which ones would fit Toshiba Satellite
1710CDS machines?).

The point with these is that they can be upgraded
surprisingly far, very cheaply (£10 - £15 will buy a faster
Pentium chip and much more memory than the machine is
"supposed" to handle; never believe the stated maximum
memory or HDD size), making them quite usable with a USB
wifi dongle and Xubuntu or other Linux on them. This would
allow people who can't afford to buy a machine to have a
functioning one and access to the internet - something we're
planning locally.
That would be a great pity. I regularly encounter
machines that will run Xubuntu but which have a BIOS
that has no USB-boot option, so a CD is required.
same here. I deal with introducing linux to under
privileged community , via xubuntu, and the machines they
have access to often don't boot usb which at that age means
no dvd but cd. The cure I end up with is burning a Plop cd
which will find the usb thumbdrive for installation. For
those interested in this approach:
Handy tool. Still wish there was a <700 mb version or
will they release a net install iso Xubuntu?<span
