Hope everyone is fine and doing well :)

I have a neighbour, who is a Windows User but because I've been talking and talking a lot about Linux, he decided to give me two laptops and asked me to install Linux and wipe Windows as he is interested to try.

Tell you the truth, I am a bit confused as what Ubuntu Based System shall I go ahead and install on these machines? these two laptops aren't Low Hardware Machines so any Ubuntu Flavour should do the job.

I was thinking about using Xubuntu because, IMHO, I think it would be a good choice for a Windows User. He has never used Linux before :)

However, I am not too sure which release do you recommend? I was thinking about 12.04 because it is an LTS release but what do you recommend?

I didn't choose Lubuntu because there is no LTS release. 13.04 is great but will reach its EOL soon. 13.10 has many issues that I would avoid for a newcomer. I am confused between Ubuntu GNOME and Xubuntu. I think Xubuntu is a bit closer to Windows than Ubuntu GNOME. I am also thinking about Peppermint but we don't have an LTS version for Peppermint AFAIK.

Hope you could enlighten me with the best choice to convert two machines to Linux :D

Also, he said that his son needs Paint because of School. I told him there are lots of alternatives but he said Paint is better and he wanted Windows on one of the machines but I will do whatever I could to not install Windows :D I might need to look at Wine or a very close alternative to Paint. Any idea?

Thank you in advance!

Hi again everyone :)

Well, mission accomplished successfully, you have now two more machines running Xubuntu :D

Thanks to all your comments/replies :)

I decided to go with Xubutnu 13.10 for the father's laptop (Thinkpad T400) and for his son (Dell Studio 1535), I decided to install Xubuntu 12.04.3 and installing the network driver is done as well :)

Everything is great so far. Well, what did you expect? of course everything should be fine ;)

I am glad to tell you that these are my very first two machines that I have recruited and converted to Xubuntu. And, this will help me personally on my project (StartUbuntu) to know what are my options because in Real Life, I am doing my best to recruit the whole neighbourhood which has so many people, more than 4000 I guess? because the facebook group is saying over 4000 :D

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StartUbuntu

I must admit that I was very limited with my options. Having that said, I used to stick to Lubuntu only. But, I guess this is not the case anymore. I am loyal to Ubuntu Communities so I am going to stick to Ubuntu Flavours :)

I guess Ubuntu GNOME is not a perfect choice for a newcomer but for someone who has seen or used Linux, it would be a good/very good choice.

These two machines 'had' Windows XP which will be expired in 5 months so this is a perfect timing. I am sure he will like Xubuntu and with this great community, every support Q will be answered so I am not worried about this.

As for Paint, I need now to figure out what do I need to do :)

Thank you everyone and I shall let you know the feedback of my neighbour after he will have his two laptops soon ;)
