"the Alternative CD requires only 64 MB" of RAM. Using the software center look for LXDE or E17/Enlightment. Both are are full featured but with even smaller footprint then XFCE. </blockquote> Using a lighter desktop environment will help, but the 260MB RAM is the limiting factor. If you can add more RAM it will make a world of difference. If these solutions don't work a distro optimised for low-spec PCs such as Puppy or Damn Small Linux might be best.
