Why dont you use ffmpeg since you are not afraid of the command line. A simple line like ffmpeg -i <inputfile.mkv> <outputfile.avi> can do the job. Obvioulsy the program has got tonnes of options. you can check the online documentation or the man pages.
I'd like to convert .mkv file to anything else - like maybe
.avi, and what I've found to use is pacpl.

Two questions:
1)after input of -t avi /(and then the Directory-File info),
there is a > and no noticeable HD activity. So, is there
something else to enter at the >?
2)Is there another way(program-wise)to do this that I've not

able to find?
Hi,
The transmageddon
(click to install) gui should do all you need, it can convert to a
variety of multimedia formats/codecs and is very easy to use. If
that doesn't do what you need, you could have a look at mencoder,
ffmpeg, or even VLC's built-in conversion tools (Under
Media>Convert/Save), there will be a tool in the packages
somewhere that'll do what you need.
