Aww, cummon Vincent...caps lock was only "sorta" ON.
Here's the output from lsusb:
On the device itself, under USB Mode. there are 2 choices:mtp or msc.
OK, in any case you want the MSC mode.

Anyway, it looks like it isn't detected at all (though that may be
because of MTP mode). It's about as far as I can help you though,
hopefully the information up till now will be enough for someone else
to work with.

You can also check the Ubuntu Community documentation on
troubleshooting the mounting of USB, that might help you: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Mount/USB#Troubleshooting
that help at all?
Ok thnx. I'll peruse the Troubleshooting doc when I get back home
tomorrow.
Checked the Troubleshooting doc, and ran dmesg out of curiosity....and
near the end got a whole bunch of this:

FAT: Filesystem panic (dev sdb1)
fat_get_cluster: invalid cluster chain (i_pos 0)

The device now shows on the desktop since I changed the setting to MSC,
but all the folders are padlocked, and I don't seem to be able to
change that. The are files inside some folders that are mp3. When I try
to change the permissions to read and write, it's denied.
