As an aside .. you shouldn't be having all these problems though - maybe copying settings from an old xubuntu is creating more problems for you than it is solving? Maybe install karmic xubuntu and don't copy any old settings? (or be very selective). The only things I copy from my previous /home/username are the visible folders (containing data) and .config/xfce4/panel (my previous panel settings).
