More info...  I just reinstalled again, but first I zeroed out the partition using dd just to see if it would report a disk error.  It didn&#39;t.  This time there were no pauses at startup, and not all of the error messages scrolled off the screen:<br>

<br>[ timestamp] end_request: I/O error, dev sr0, sector #####<br><br>Some of the sector numbers repeat as if it is doing retries.<br><br>What is the sr0 device?  Google doesn&#39;t tell me much; it seems to turn up in all sorts of different types of error reports.<br>
