I'm not sure, I never used that method. However, if you are able to burn a
CD, I'd recommend you to burn Xubuntu to one, then run the LiveCD and
install it to USB from there. See (note: I wrote this)
http://xubuntublog.wordpress.com/2008/11/07/ubuntu-from-your-flash-drive-easier-than-ever-before/
That's sort of the official way and has worked for me.
>>

Ok, I downloaded the ISO, made and booted on the live CD. The usb-creator app is not part of the live CD though it surely seems as if it should be. I can't download and install it it because I'm running on a CD. I refuse to overwrite my laptop harddisk until I know for sure ubuntu actually works with all my hardware.

Your instructions are great, but they do not apply to someone who just wants to give ubuntu a test drive without loading the entire system on his harddisk - which completely defeats the pupose of installing it on a thumbdrive.

What I really need to test is the wifi. Under the other install referenced previously, linux saw my wifi adapter but I couldn't figure out how to configure it. Under the live CD, it doesn't even see the adapter. I don't know what will happen if I install ubuntu on the harddisk. Being as wifi is my only connection to the internet, I am hesitant to do the install without being sure. This is why I want to test it out with a persistent install on a thumbdrive. Catch-22!
