I also agree with this!
When I first tried Linux a few months ago I didn't know what was a Window Manager nor a Desktop Environment, so things like GNOME, KDE and XCFE were just a bunch of acronyms to me and just made me confused on which to choose.

If the distro was unified (and some sort of explanation on what a desktop environment is was placed somewhere reachable for a newbie) it would be simpler for newcomers to choose the variant they want.

One vote from me - I definitely agree that all products should be called
Ubuntu - 'some variant'.

For the record, I am new to Ubuntu and Linux, so hopefully I am in a good
position to comment.

This is all about perceptions, and having Ubuntu, Xubuntu, Kubuntu, etc.
gives the impression that the Ubuntu community is divided. I now know that
this is not the case (and I use Unbuntu and Xubuntu), but it is important
to create the right first-impression so as to not discourage or confuse
potential users of Ubuntu.

Regards,
David Collins
(Citrix Support Engineer during the day)

"Jesus Gamio"
