what I am thinking is that it might be that the interface is seen but not being interfaced to correctly, which can happen with the right firmware but the wrong version of it, and that is why i am curious if the interface can scan for access points. I had a similar problem with my old work laptop (thank god the new one came with an intel pro wifi card) where the firmware was correct but there was a newer version of it that i needed, though they weren't referred to as different version numbers just as a 1309 and 1309a ..... thus broadcom infinitely fails at life.
