Chris, have you had any kernel updates recently? Did you go from (for example) 2.6.18-4 to 2.6.18-5?

When my kernel gets updated, I need to install new restricted kernel modules to get my wifi working again. I found instructions on how to do this in
this blog posting.

If you can boot into an older kernel version, and your wifi works, but does not work under a newer kernel version, the above approach would definitely be something worth checking out.

Yes, the system saw it and it properly functioned; it connected to the
Internet using the wifi and downloaded stuff during installation. And
I have not changed the wifi card or laptop or anything like that ever
since; everything is same as it was during installation.

There is no "D-Link" output as such. But here is the wifi bit from the
lspci output:

02:02.0 Ethernet controller: Atheros Communications, Inc. AR5212
802.11abg NIC (rev 01)
02:03.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd.
