1) Yes, all the updates are compatible because Xubuntu is in fact Ubuntu but with some tweaks ... think of it like "diet ubuntu" if you like.<br><br>2) Worst case scenario is that those applications will pull in some gnome-lib dependencies and slow things down while the gnome-libs are taking up system memory.
