I had exactly the same problem and this is how I solved it:

Edit /etc/default/grub

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT='quiet splash'

Change to GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT='quiet'

sudo update-grub
