Currently updating BIOS and trying 18.04 and then 16.04 in hopes of something working. Will report back with results - I do not have high hopes. This laptop is a 2 in 1 so I guess xubuntu isn't liking that.  I'll try a different window manager or distribution and see how I go.  Unfortunate, I use xubuntu for everything else! I gave up on Xubuntu for similar reasons, and moved to Ubuntu Mate.
