I might just use the guest session. And so, is there a way of setting it up with the configurations of another account, for example, set the background image, the xfce panel switch, the network configs?

Though it has been awhile this link should get you headed in the right direction.

There is plenty of info out there to fully customize and restrict users. My toughest was computer systems in a half-way house. Half a dozen programs for job searching and locking down surfing to trusted only sites with a dns filter from OpenDNS. Just so you know it can be done and the information is out there.

Also, if you set UID to < 1000 it will not appear in the available login list. I used this to hide my admin accounts on client systems. Use "Other..." option to login into the hidden accounts. Students would only ever see "Guest"
