Yes, this is a new installation, wiping the entire disk clean.
That was my intention - no problem here.

Problem: that "Software" thing, which used to be "Software Center", does 
not work properly.
Not only did it delete LOTS OF applications that were present and which 
I DID install on through it before,
the ones available DO NOT INSTALL, as I described already.
Sometimes I get the error that I should check my internet connection (in 
my case: wired).
But both browser and mailer are working.

Mr. Adsen suggested:

If you want the old Software Center back, run the following in a terminal:

sudo apt install software-center


THAT does not work either. I get the error:
"Package software center is not available, but is referred to b another 
package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted or is only 
available from another source."

AND .. when I tried "sudo apt-get install xxx" for an application,
I get a long list of "Failed to fetch xxx" lines, so that installation 
via the terminal is not working either.
