Hmm, I don't know if it is related with the Xubuntu core, but I don't have
the /boot/vmlinuz* files. I've tried (as root):

apt-get install linux-image-virtual
apt-get install linux-headers-generic
apt-get install linux-headers-4.4.0-21 linux-headers-4.4.0-21-generic
apt-get -V install linux-generic
apt-get install --reinstall linux-image-virtual
apt-get install --reinstall linux-headers-4.4.0-21
linux-headers-4.4.0-21-generic

But still:

$ ls -l /boot/vmlinuz* /boot/initrd*
ls: cannot access '/boot/vmlinuz*': No such file or directory
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 37977042 May  7 18:32
/boot/initrd.img-4.4.0-21-generic

How to have the /boot/vmlinuz* files?
