I can't recall any X server updates recently, but that might be worth
looking for.

That is odd. Since gpm works the kernel driver is probably OK, but I
don't understand why X can't see the events. Can you install evemu-tools
and see if evemu-record can see them?
Other than that I think you need to file a bug, but it would be
helpful to know exactly which package is causing the problem.
