Sounds like hardware may be a problem too. Test hdd (smartctl), memory. 
If you think it is time related (after on for x time) or load related 
you might suspect graphics chips. In the past I've seen lots of problems 
where (nvidia) chips became too hot and BGA connections broke, resulting 
in the same freezes. But it can be anything...
