+1 since Synaptic is a good frontend for apt.

In my experiences all recommended and suggested packages should be
installed too. Ubuntu websites are down at the moment, so I can't
see, if this still is true.

sudo -i
apt-get update
apt-get install --install-suggests synaptic
when finished push Ctrl + D .
