All Linuxes have (always have had) a delay during boot when the screen
goes black and the cursor disappears. I have never understood why this
should be. I have always assumed it's an artifact of me using older,
slower computers, but I have seen it on faster ones too.
New users are particularly set aback by this, because it looks as if
it's broken.
It would be great if the logo or some indication of life could persist
while it does this, but I suspect it's a point at which X is trying to
work out what kind of screen it's dealing with, or something similar,
so the blankness may be unavoidable.
