This is my first time trying to answer a mailing so sorry if anything goes
wrong. I use a Dell Inspiron 14r, a laptop model that is on sale in the
Dell website, along with Xubuntu 15.04. I also use Xubuntu in an older
laptop that has 4 GB, so I believe low to mid end laptop that you buy will
do just fine.
One thing to notice is that Dell has a strong partnership with Microsoft,
so when you buy a computer from them, be sure you are not paying for an
embedded Windows license. Last time I checked they sell laptops with Ubuntu
pre-installed.

Just to summarise the viewpoints:
1. Consider major brands, Dell and HP (Elite or Probook series) and
Intel inside
2. Use a Live Distro as a probing process if required
3. Use any warranty period creatively: If it don't work, return it.
4. Some of the older brands bought secondhand can also be quite good and
economical eg Thinkpads
Thanks for your responses.
