I tried both.  Command 1 result:

john at sentry16:~$ sudo apt-get -f install
[sudo] password for john:

0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 3 not upgraded.
john at sentry16:~$

Command 2 result (tried 4 times)

sudo dpkg --configure -a (poss more than once)

only got a CR LF
