I'd guess the default configuration is to have the external screen act
as an extension of your desktop. Try to move the pointer outside the
edges of the screen on your laptop, and it will probably show up on the
external screen. Then you can just open windows there and drag them
to/from the internal screen.

If this is the case, and you want the displays to be mirrored, go into
Settings -> Display and select "Mirrored displays".
