FWIW: I've operated on partitions using qparted, including shrinking the 
Windows partition to make room for Linux. No problems. I DID leave the 
starting points for partitions created by the Win installer where they were 
and shrunk the larger, Win partition. Oh: this was for Win-7 and earlier versions.
