[xubuntu-users] Problem with Alias

I am running v-14.04.2 (that version allows me to run some of my quantum 
chemistry programs that give me problems in other Linux distributions) 
and have a problem with a particular alias statement:

alias mopac='/opt/mopac/MOPAC2012.exe'

The above only works in /opt/mopac, and no other directories.  The 
permissions for the /opt/mopac directory are drwxrwxrwx.

I would appreciate an explanation.
