Note that xrandr left works perfectly in e17, so perhaps look in a copy
of that for whatever drivers are used.

I do this (rotation) sometimes with a wide-screen display so that I can
get a larger preview of an A4 document I am typesetting *and* still have
space for my edit window below it. My display isn't one of those
rotateable ones, but it unhooks from its stand very easily and can be
propped up against it without slipping.
