I spoke too soon. After a reboot, it's back to it's old habits again.
The print job shows as pending in the printer queue window, and lpstat
mar at marbase:~ $ lpstat -t
scheduler is running
system default destination: Brother-HL-2240D-series

I was able to print a test page and one test file and then it died again.
I tried installing the hpijs driver set and connected it as a 2140
with the hpijs-pcl5e driver and that seems to work for now.
I'd like to have this not need to be changed every time I boot....
