Out of curiosity I flipped to Ctl-Alt-F1, logged in, ran an upgrade, and
logged out.

When I went back to my X session with Ctl-Alt-F7, it immediately faded
out, presumably due to the timeout for the screen blanking, and nothing
I could type or click would bring it back. Waving the mouse, which would
normally give me back the interface, was ineffective.

Then I must have had my mouse over my email when I tried Ctl-S and it
woke up and gave me the application's Save As dialog :-)
