[xubuntu-users] I have a similar problem involving kalarm, mythtv, and the screen saver.

Replying to myself, sorry.  

Restarting Xfwm4 or starting another window manager, like compiz, 
is the only thing that seems to work.  the Compiz Fusion Icon 
gives an easy way to do either.
