First download the .ISO file to your hard disk.
Then use your computers software
to make a bootable CD from the ISO
Then insert the CD and reboot the machine.
It may be necessary to twiddle the BIOS settings early on in
in a blue screen in the bootup
to tell it boot from CD

FAO Steven Verner,
Could you possibly post a step by step idiot's guide to making a disk for
ubuntu by using the direct download for 32 bit which you mention. Please
could you assume that I know nothing because you wouldn't be far wrong!
Thanks
Gordon

Yes, there is an alternate install. Here is your direct download for 32
bit.
http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/trusty/main/installer-i386/current/images/netboot/mini.iso
Burn to CD like normal and there will be an option to install Xubuntu
Desktop (among others) during installation.
