At least part of the missing/broken/duplicate icons is because LightDM
supplies some of its own, and XFCE has routines that launch indicators.
I had to hunt down the LightDM indicator routines and rename them to keep
them from starting at all, since it runs first before XFCE. When XFCE
session startup launches something similar, either you get two icons, or
one because the later start attempt crashed, or none because the running
one crashed.
I strongly suspect that the (already-fragile) network manager notifier
either crashes or won't run due to such conficts of "who's in charge here"
that LightDM and who knows what else starting notifiers is causing.
