Hi Christopher,
asking how to get rid of unneeded packages isn't a dumb question. It
could become very complicated, if some packages that are useful where
installed as dependency of another package. What I want to point out is,
that there could be obsolet packages, that are good for nothing, e.g.
after release upgrades, other packages where need as a dependency for
another package, they could be useful for somebody, while other people
want to get rid of them, if they aren't needed as a dependency anymore.
There is no perfectly smart package management, resp. a user at least
has to mark package to help the package management, e.g. something was
installed as a dependency only, but you want to keep it, even if you
remove the package that needed this dependency. How different package
managements work, how to set up a special behavior for the package
management command, e.g. Debian's/*buntu's apt's pinning, Arch's
pacman's ignore package etc. pp. or what ever else functionality for
RPM, DEB or whatever based distros, usually is explained by manuals and
howtos for dummies that are available in the Internet, _but_ it can't
harm to send a request to a mailing list _because_ it's a very complex
domain.
I do not claim your question is a dumb question, but indeed, I claim
that your posting style comes with unneeded quotes and endless lines.
Regards,
Ralf
