[xubuntu-users] Can't sign in to xubuntu desktop, infinite login loop

I installed xubuntu-desktop on kubuntu and everything worked fine until I
shutdown and restarted now I can't get past the login to which it keeps
coming back.  Password is good, I can still ssh into the computer and I can
sudo.  Tried removing .Xauthority and all the other things that are easily
found using google.  Sometimes I get a MAGIC-NUMBER error but I don't know
what do with that.  Any suggestions on where to look or something else to
try would be much appreciated.
