[xubuntu-users] suspend corrupts something

I apologize if this is a repost. My impression is that this didn't get
through the first time.
I am having a problem with suspend and resume. I suspect that this is a
nouveau issue but I don't know this for sure.
I have a Thinkpad W520 and it has both an NVidia card (lshw reports
GF108GLM [Quadro 1000M]) and an Intel integrated graphics controller. I
can switch modes in the bios and I do this on occasion because they have
different advantages. I am running Xubuntu 13.10 and I use the nouveau
drivers with the NVidia card.
My problem only happens when I set the graphics card to use NVidia and
this is why I suspect that this might be a nouveau problem. If I suspend
the machine and resume it then at first glance, everything seems ok. My
X session generally looks fine and most applications still work.
However after the suspend and resume, three of my applications
(quakespasm, mathematica and virtualbox) no longer work. Two of them
(mathematica and virtualbox) cause X system to freeze and I am not even
able to go to a different console window with C-Alt-F1. After some time
X will shutdown and restart. After X restarts, I am fine again as long
as I don't use the three programs.
The problem with quake is a bit different. X is still frozen but I can
go to a different console with C-Alt-F1 and kill quake from there.
After killing quake X is unstuck and I can continue doing things.
In the period while X is frozen and crashing there are some messages
that show up in the syslog which say:
nouveau E[Xorg[1680]] failed to idle channel 0xcccc0001 [Xorg[1680]]
I can replicate this problem fairly consistently with mathematica and I
have also replicated this on a fresh xubuntu install.
I don't know enough about Linux to know what additional information to
post. I put some logs on the web page here:
http://mousey.synology.me/2013-12-23-logs
The last messages in the Xorg.0.log look like this:

[ 1068.740] nouveau_exa_download_from_screen:299 - falling back to memcpy ignores tiling
