I have been using Canon scanners with xsane for a few years now and
never have any trouble with them (that I didn't cause myself).  For me
they are more reliable and durable than HPs.

I currently have two Canon CanoScan N1240U/LiDE 30s that I bought on
eBay.  Both work, but I had somehow set the scan to a 0 pixel width
setting (so of course it wouldn't run) and I didn't figure it out
until I bought the second one.  (Turns out the second one scans
better, but it clicks more, too.)
