Some 14.10 packages might be buggy, perhaps worth considering to file
bug reports. However, lightdm is a lightweight display manager, that
doesn't something special and assumed there are no bugs, each display
manger can be replaced by each other.
Assumed you need Orca or something special, it might be, that it only
works with display mangers that provide special greeters.
Btw. I hope that George made a typo
"and it starts things that a normal window manager or 'startx' won't"
"normal window manager" should be "normal display manager"?!
lightdm is a normal display manager and it's lightweight.
