Who ask this question wasn't told to do all the sudo updates you should do
after installing xubuntu.  I did and mine works great.  It made it a lot
faster, plus ran better.  I dont use hibernate, lock screen and turn off
monitor work for me.  I do have a lot of extra computers, so I try about
everything suggested after installing xubuntu 12.04.  I dont use a laptop,
but I suspect hibernate works about the same way internally both on laptop
and desktop.  I dont worry about a couple cents a day that it may or may
not save me though either.   Sometimes I just leave my machine on and go to
bed.  It does power down when screen saver kicks in anyhow.  I do click off
internet pages.
