So it is, but one of the sections in smb.conf is [printers] and that's
what's used to share a printer in the normal sense of the word.
I think the problem is terminology (my misunderstanding). "Sharing"
means "using the Microsoft SMB protocol to broadcast the existence of
printers on the network and providing print services". If all you're
using is a manual IPP printer config on each laptop, that isn't what is
normally meant by "sharing" as I understood it; but maybe I've been
working in too restricted an environment.

That looks like you're using some HP protocol.
