Hi Darren,
                 On my laptop, a Samsung, I select F10 when I switch on 
and loading starts and this brings up a different menu to grub. I can 
then select Windows 8 which loads OK. F 10 is selected when booting from 
a USB. Check whether you need to use a function key to get to the 
Windows menu on your laptop.
