It's the same for me and even if I use a file browser, I tend to _not_
use ~/Desktop/ .
I'll encourage users to use xfce4-terminal instead of a file browse.
Perhaps not everybody is aware about the features terminal emulations do
provide, such as auto completion for commands and paths by the tab-key,
scrolling through the command history by the cursor keys, using aliases
and even writing a wrapper as a shell script can be done by noobs.
I installed rodent "Lightweight, yet full of options file manager,
compatible with console commands", but never used it, perhaps this is
useful for transition from using file browsers to terminal usage.
Using the terminal isn't for nerds or people who want to be cool only,
it's really easier, it only seems to be harder, since people likely are
accustomed to use file browsers.
For example:

Strangely enough if you drag & drop off the desktop whilst the Thunar
Desktop folder is open, it does move the file!"
Such things can happen, if something has a bug or upstream folks have
strange worldviews. No user is able to remember such crap: If x then
drag and drop behaves like p, if y then drag and drop behaves like q.
When using the terminal everything usually works as expected, the great
advantage of an operating system that isn't locked and that does provide
a terminal.
