I never let edit my configurations by the GRUB updater. Could you use a
Linux live media and mount /boot of your installed Linux?
I often used the Parted Magic x86_64 ISOs for other tasks, available at
e.g. http://linuxtracker.org/index.php?page=torrents&category=421
Fortunately I've got several Linux installed and don't need a live media
to fix similar issues.
What are the entries of grub.cfg (GRUB 2) or menu.lst (GRUB legacy)?
It's possible to edit those entries manually from the live media.
Regards,
Ralf
