[xubuntu-users] How to disable NVIDIA driver update notifications?

Hello all,

I'm new to Xubuntu and new on the list. I've installed Xubuntu 12.04 LTS
on a 10 year old Shuttle FX43G with 1 GB RAM and an NVIDIA GeForce FX
5700VE graphics card. During the installation from cd, I discovered that
the cdrom player had problems reading the Xubuntu installation cd, which I
had burnt on another pc. So I replaced the iffy cd player first.
Thereafter, installation of Xubuntu went impressively smoothly, except for
the dual monitor configuration. The NVIDIA drivers that Xubuntu 12.04
offered during/after installation didn't detect the monitor that was on
the DVI port. The other monitor on the VGA port was detected.

12.04 offered three nvidia-setting drivers. I tried all of them and they
all detected only one of the monitors. In NVIDIA X Server Settings, all
three drivers gave this message:

"Unable to load X Server Display Configuration page. The NVIDIA X driver
is not new enough to support the nvidia-settings display configuration
page."

I tried a number of solutions offered on the internet. None of them
worked. Eventually, this suggestion did:

The NVIDIA driver on the FX 5700 is version 173.14. The
nvidia-settings_195.36.08-0ubuntu2_i386.deb driver works with 173.14. Both
monitors are shown and configurable in NIVIDIA X Server Settings.

Now, the Xubuntu update-notifier keeps on reminding me that I need to
update the 'Transitional package for nvididia-settings' and that I should
install 'nividia-settings 304'. Obviously, I don't want the new driver.
How can I disable these notifications concerning NVIDIA drivers?

Thanks for your help.

Frits
