Could be anything as it doesn't really help without relevant details,
but glad you have a 2Tb hard drive. What model would the "upgraded HP
Compaq" computer be? How old is it? Could it be a hardware failure? Is
this a fresh install or after an upgrade? Did it work before the
upgrade? Does it work the same on a LiveCD? Does a USB keyboard work?
Can you ssh into it when it happens and troubleshoot it? etc. Could be
hardware or/and software.

Without the solutions you've been seeking in threads, we can't be of
much help. You won't be forced in any way to use *Windows* - there are
plenty of other distributions and ways around the problem if you help
us to help you.
