[xubuntu-users] failure to upgrade from 10.04 to 12.04.1

I managed to make some progress on this.

I used a chroot environment (as described here [1] using the
SystemRescueCd) to repair grub (now I can boot 3.2.0) and to run
multiple 'aptitude', 'dpkg --configure -a', 'apt-get install -f',
'apt-get dist-upgrade'. In the end I managed to get down the nr of
unconfigured packages from ~2700 (likely the entire upgrade batch) to
some ~700 packages.

To my surprise after a reboot I managed to *almost* boot the 3.2.0
kernel. I get the following errors:
init: plymouth main process terminated with status 69
init: mounted-dev main process terminated with status 1
mountall: Event failed

Next is what I think a slightly erroneous message as both / and /boot
drives are clean (manual check). :
The disk drive for / is not ready yet or not present.

When I hit 'M' for manual recovery and I run 'mountall' I get the
following error:
"Event failed"

My booting issues still revolve around 'mountall' and 'plymouth. Both
packages are in the list of packages that haven't been configured yet
and that 'apt-get' and friends are unable to process. Any ideas on how
to work around this?
