Thanks again. I have looked at the guide and all seems fine. I have also
tried to make sure that the settings for Xubuntu 12.04 and v 12.10 to
match, and they do. So they should both work, but only 12.04 gives me a
full screen using the Guest Additions.  There are other distros also set
up in my VBox and they all work fine too. So perhaps the other list
member who mentioned that the graphics have changed ready for 3D games
was right. But in that case why do you not have any problems? Very strange.

Anyway, thanks for the suggestions. I think that I will either stay with
version 12.04, which is LTS, or look for another distro such as Kubuntu
or Mint KDE.
