At this point I don't know what to tell you other than I just tried it 
and was able to change the font size doing what was outlined above.  I 
use monospace in Tbird and that's what I changed.  Maybe you should 
check to be sure you are changing the font size on the font you are 
using.  Also there is a box there to allow messages to use other fonts. 
It is unchecked on my setup but I don't if it has any effect on what we 
are discussing.
