I can't tell you how to set Opera as the default browser as I don't have 
Xubuntu installed right now and I need a visual to remember, but I CAN 
tell you why Firefox is so slow: it eats through the RAM really quick 
when being used heavily, and 1GB of ram will be filled within 15 minutes 
or so. Firefox uses the old Xul framework which hasn't had improvements 
in that area in a good while.
