Hi,
You could try running
sudo iwlist scanning
to see if more networks are detected. You could also try using the 
standard network-manager (sudo apt-get install network-manager 
network-manager-gnome), and see if more networks are found. Failing 
that, you could edit /etc/network/interfaces 
<http://nixcraft.com/ubuntu-debian/13278-etc-network-interfaces-wireless-wifi-example.html> 
and force the interface to connect to a certain wifi access point.
