I suggest reading the Arch Linux Installation guide, installing setting up
and using Arch Linux for a couple of months.
It's great for investigating such things - everything you need is written
in the Arch wiki -.

Xubuntu = great out-of-the-box experience
Arch = great do-it-yourself experience
